Climbing Facts Scott is 18 years old. He graduated high school in June, and began a year long climbing journey before he starts college. He started climbing when he was 7 years old. Scott has competed in the USA Climbing competition series for ten years. He has been a USA Climbing Team Member nine times. At 8 years old, Scott was the youngest member ever on the Team. He was competing in the 11 & under category at the time. He is one of the top ranked junior climbers in the world. He won his first International Climbing competition in October of 2000, competing against kids from across the United States, Canada and Venezuela. Scott started lead climbing outdoors when he was 7 years old. Many of his best climbing achievements have been in Red Rocks, Nevada and at Mt. Charleston, Nevada. One of his best climbs was an on-sight of “Yaak Crack” 11d, at 7 years old, where he is believed to be the youngest person to ever climb this route. Later that same day, he red-pointed “Fear and Loathing III, 12a, on his second attempt. He climbed “Guntower” 12a at 9 years old. He is especially proud of climbing “The Gift”, 12d, also when he was 9. Scott attempted this route over 30 times on multiple climbing trips. While Scott loves sport climbing, he enjoys multi-pitch climbs also. He started climbing in Yosemite Valley at 8 years old. His first climbs were “Commitment”, “Nutcracker” and “Goodrich Pinnacle”. The Nose - September & October 2001 To the delight of hundreds of spectators and well wishers in El Cap Meadow in Yosemite Valley, and thousands throughout the country, Scott Cory, Tommy Caldwell & Beth Rodden succeed in their quest of a one day ascent of the world's most famous big wall climb - "The Nose" of El Capitan. Scott wanted to raise money for the families of 9/11 victims and the climb was a fundraiser for AmeriCares. Many of the well wishers in the Valley waved American flags to spur the climbers on. On October 2, 2001, the threesome completed the climb in 13 hours and 40 minutes, and in doing so, Scott became the youngest person to summit 'The Nose' in one day. This wasn't Scott's first trip up "The Nose". In September of 2001, he summited the 3000 foot, 34 pitch, "Nose" of El Capitan. Scott's team included climbing greats - Hans Florine, Beth Rodden & Tori Allen. Tommy Caldwell & Steve Schneider were riggers on the climb. The climb was filmed for a documentary that will be available late 2004. The first day they set up ropes and came back to the ground, beginning again the next morning. The climb took four days and two nights, and Scott loved every minute of it! The first thing he said was that he wanted to do it again! Scott became the youngest person to summit "The Nose".
Half Dome - 2003 and 2004 Nearly two years after his record breaking one day ascent of “The Nose” of El Capitan, Scott set off for a new record, climbing Half Dome in just one day. Scott succeeded beautifully, spending nearly fifteen hours on the route. Scott is now the youngest person to ever have climbed Half Dome in one day. Amazingly, at just thirteen, Scott had one day ascents of two of the most famous big walls in the world. Scott climbed Half Dome with Hans Florine. Hans has been a mentor to Scott since the very beginning of his climbing career. Sixteen year old Chelsea Rude from Georgia and Scott Bovard from California accompanied Scott and Hans on the wall. The climb was filmed for National Geographic On Assignment. What makes this one day ascent really special is that according to the Yosemite guidebooks, this route usually takes three days. It includes a three hour approach to the base of the climb, and a four hour descent, after climbing the 2000 vertical feet of Half Dome. Scott went back to attempt Half Dome again in June of 2004. His second time up he climbed with Hans Florine and Tommy Caldwell. They topped out in 7 hours and 7 minutes. Big improvement in a year.
